LAHORE: Punjab’s Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif unveiled the launch of the largest-ever Ramzan Relief Programme, Nigheban Ramzan package, in the province yesterday, fulfilling commitments outlined during her inaugural parliamentary address.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the CM’s Office, Sharif emphasised the swift implementation of the Ramzan assistance, designed to reach citizens directly at their homes, thereby alleviating any inconvenience. The programme, devised within a nine-day timeframe, aims to extend prompt relief to deserving individuals throughout the sacred month, under the guidance of PML-N leader Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. “My objective is to deliver aid to the people directly,” she affirmed.

The Chief Minister elaborated on the initiative, which encompasses the distribution of 65,000 packages featuring QR codes, benefiting over 30 million inhabitants in Punjab. Integration of beneficiary data from the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has expedited the process, with the forthcoming Punjab Socio-Economic Registry Project slated to provide comprehensive data for future governmental interventions.

Highlighting the contents of the Ramzan relief package, including staples such as flour, ghee, sugar, rice, and gram flour, Sharif instructed district administrations and the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) to ensure the quality of supplied items. She underscored the importance of random inspections on hamper contents and the implementation of digitised delivery mechanisms utilising applications developed by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) to enhance transparency.

Ensuring fair and timely distribution among deserving recipients, a digital record of the distribution of 6.5 million hampers has been established, complemented by a helpline (080002345) for public feedback and grievances. Sharif announced the establishment of Ramzan bazaars in every district, offering essential commodities at discounted rates, alongside the development of a dedicated price control system to combat hoarding and price escalation.

Underlining a zero-tolerance stance towards overpricing, Sharif highlighted ongoing raids by district administration officials to address the sale of everyday items at inflated rates and prevent artificial shortages. With activated price control committees, storage facility owners have been urged to register within three days for effective governmental oversight.
